McDonald’s Billboard lights up the sky.

Leo Burnett lights up the sky with their new McDonald’s “Best Fries on the Planet” billboard. The advertising shows that simplicity can be powerful. This advertisement can be seen within a 3 mile radius of the billboard, which is incredible. It’s cool to see original advertising and stepping outside of the box when it comes to thinking of something clever and new for McDonald’s. It’s interesting to see billboards used in a unique way and I wonder what is next in terms of non-traditional advertising.

Having done 3 semesters of advanced art installation in my studio art degree, I think this kind of class would be beneficial to an advertising program by combining art with advertising and allowing students to explore many ideas within non-traditonal advertising and teaching them to be simple and conceptual in order to gain consumer interest and attention.

Steve Jobs and the 7 Rules of Success

1. Do what you love. Jobs once said, “People with passion can change the world for the better.” Asked about the advice he would offer would-be entrepreneurs, he said, “I’d get a job as a busboy or something until I figured out what I was really passionate about.” That’s how much it meant to him. Passion is everything.

2. Put a dent in the universe. Jobs believed in the power of vision. He once asked then-Pepsi President, John Sculley, “Do you want to spend your life selling sugar water or do you want to change the world?” Don’t lose sight of the big vision.

3. Make connections. Jobs once said creativity is connecting things. He meant that people with a broad set of life experiences can often see things that others miss. He took calligraphy classes that didn’t have any practical use in his life — until he built the Macintosh. Jobs traveled to India and Asia. He studied design and hospitality. Don’t live in a bubble. Connect ideas from different fields.

4. Say no to 1,000 things. Jobs was as proud of what Apple chose not to do as he was of what Apple did. When he returned in Apple in 1997, he took a company with 350 products and reduced them to 10 products in a two-year period. Why? So he could put the “A-Team” on each product. What are you saying “no” to?

5. Create insanely different experiences. Jobs also sought innovation in the customer-service experience. When he first came up with the concept for the Apple Stores, he said they would be different because instead of just moving boxes, the stores would enrich lives. Everything about the experience you have when you walk into an Apple store is intended to enrich your life and to create an emotional connection between you and the Apple brand. What are you doing to enrich the lives of your customers?

6. Master the message. You can have the greatest idea in the world, but if you can’t communicate your ideas, it doesn’t matter. Jobs was the world’s greatest corporate storyteller. Instead of simply delivering a presentation like most people do, he informed, he educated, he inspired and he entertained, all in one presentation.

7. Sell dreams, not products. Jobs captured our imagination because he really understood his customer. He knew that tablets would not capture our imaginations if they were too complicated. The result? One button on the front of an iPad. It’s so simple, a 2-year-old can use it. Your customers don’t care about your product. They care about themselves, their hopes, their ambitions. Jobs taught us that if you help your customers reach their dreams, you’ll win them over.

Creepy friend request from your unborn child.

We are always told to always take risks in advertising, but when is it going too far?

Here is an advertisement I came across today for Olla condoms, in which guys were sent a friend request on Facebook from their unborn baby. I thought it was a clever and memorable way to get the point across by utilizing social media. Has it gone too far though? Perhaps this kind of advertising needs to be more direct and in your face to make the target pay attention. Is it too invasive to use a fake profile with someone’s name and jr on the end of it in the requests?

Volkswagen: Let the force be with you!

This year, one of my favorite ads would have to be the Volkswagen: The Force. I like the fact that is combining something well known in a unique way. In the first half of the commercial, the viewer is allowed to feel somewhat sorry for the kid who is trying to use his powers, but they don’t happen to be working. Then his Dad let’s him use his superpowers on the midsize sedan while he controls the car with a remote starter in the house. Powerful storytelling.

If I could buy all these handmade fonts I would.

I was doing a lot of research on handmade fonts for one of my ads and came across a lot of interesting stuff online. I never realized the depth and creativity people could go in creating fonts.

This is probably my favorite of all handmade font sites. If I had a million dollars, I would probably buy all of these awesome fonts and use them in some form or fashion.

Definitely worth checking out if you are bored with being so plain and simple.

Roy Lichtenstein style in photoshop

As an artist, I’m always inspired by pop art especially Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. I was excited when I found this photoshop tutorial, which I hope to try out soon. The author uses various techniques with the halftone pattern to imitate the style of Roy Lichtenstein.

Personal Project Idea Practice

I found some awesome personal projects by Brock Davis on Adweek.  It’s really inspiring to see someone who thinks outside the box in his everyday life. He purposely tries to create spontaneously, which helps him see ordinary things in a new way. I think it would be interesting for everyone to try to do this to loosen their minds and open up the way they think. We may even come up with great ideas from this on the spot practice.

Here are a few ideas he posted:

Idea Paint

Have you ever wanted to have a whole dry erase board on your wall? Well now you can with Idea Paint. http://www.ideapaint.com/ You can turn any office space, room, or surface into a hub of creativity and collaboration with a giant dry erase board. I think it would be awesome for the Communication School to have a couple “brainstorming” rooms with this stuff. I think it would definitely aide quick brainstorming and ideas and be an awesome way for students to work together on their projects. It is also a fairly inexpensive way to make use of the space that already exists. Now I totally want this for my apartment to create quick advertising thumbnails that I can erase and alter in a second.
